OPENING RECEPTION: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 6-9PM

At the November Group Show and Weekend Workshop, photographer Dean Lent won the drawing for a one-night solo show at Rogue Space.   

Dean Lent graduated UCLA film school where he co-directed and shot the punk cult film Border Radio with Allison Anders.  Since then he’s shot nearly 25 indie features including the Sundance darling Gas Food Lodging, the cult horror comedy Jack Frost, and Phat Girlz (starring Mo’Nique).  He’s recently been a segment shooter for the Emmy award winning Tyra Banks Show in New York.

While in New York (LA is still his home base) he started taking pictures of the city with his flip cell phone (1.3 megapixels) simply as a lark between shoots.  He began fiddling with the images in a basic free photo organizer with surprising results, then sharing them on facebook where the response from his friends and colleagues was singular: DO A SHOW!

New York–Jane Gennaro will exhibit a survey of reliefs, sculptures and assemblages from the past seven years at Rogue House, from October 22-November 14, 2009. An opening reception will be held on Thursday October 22 from 6-8pm at the gallery, located at 526 W. 26^th St., 9F. Gallery hours are 11am-6pm, Tuesday-Saturday. The exhibition will focus on two of Gennaro’s major series, which use insects, eggs and bones, as well as vintage handkerchiefs and illustrations.

Gennaro will be reading her monologue “Shaking the Goose Egg” eight times during the run of the exhibition. The monologue recounts her confrontation with a pair of wild geese which was the impetus for beginning the visual work on display. Reading schedule: Sunday Oct. 25 at 1pm, Friday Oct. 30 at 7pm, Saturday Oct. 31 at 3pm, Thursday Nov. 5 at 7pm, Friday Nov. 6 at 7pm, Saturday Nov. 7 at 3pm, Thursday Nov. 12 at 7pm, Friday Nov. 13 at 7pm.

The show’s title, Articulate Remains, refers to the artist giving voice to the objects that she finds in nature. Gennaro has written that, “The process begins with observation and culminates in storytelling….The impulse is to save these things and transform them into personal yet universal narratives that will seduce and disturb.”

Ellen Brous – “So You Think You Can Dance”, Oct 15th – 18th

So You Think You Can Dance, is an installation that comments on art, architecture, high fashion, music and dance; examining the connection between the two worlds of fine art and pop culture.

Three motorized skirt sculptures, each reaching 10 feet high, evoke a graceful image of dancers in motion. The skirts, made from boning material used in dressmaking, create slivers of sensuous lines that appear to be drawn and placed into space. Hanging from mobile armatures at the ceiling each of the skirts nine tiers of boning is individually attached with invisible thread, inviting the viewers to touch and cause the skirts to undulate in an independent swing to the music.

The architecture of the narrow gallery space inspired the skirts in-line placement and led to choosing music representative of Irish Riverdance, a dance performed in a line and genres of music that enhance the fast paced, heart pumping strut of models queued on a fashion runway.

Ellen Brous holds a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College. She has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in the New York City area and is a former teacher.

Group Show and Artist Marketing Workshop, September 25th – 27th

We celebrated our fourth artists weekend workshop September 25th to 27th with our group of talented and energetic artists.

Following our opening day curatorial workshop by our curator Kelly Worman, we enjoyed really well attended reception Friday evening.

Saturday, following a fun tour of the top gallery shows in Chelsea, we had a wonderfully informative lectures by Sharon Reaves owner and founder of Reaves Gallery in San Francisco on art marketing and Emilia Jarrett Page (Uniform Standards

of Professional Appraisal Practice ) on the fundemals on how to price your work.

Topics covered included social networking sites, personal artist websites, mass emails and finding new places and opportunities for exhibiting your work.

Sunday we had a relaxing Sunday afternoon family day and watched films about the artists process created by FilmsOnArtists.com.

Our drawing for a solo show at Rogue Space was won by Cheryl Fallon who also sold several works during the show.

Next up at Rogue Space is the Preview Reception for the High Line Open Studios which we are producing this year.
